Congratulations! I liked it!
This is a great piece, Andrew. I enjoyed it. You managed to create a very vivid world with a small palette. I was simultaneously reminded of Robert Howard’s Hyperborea, and Weis & Hickman’s Dragonlance setting (from, say, the first six books). There’s a lot of material here you can work with — and I, for one, am looking forward to see how you might use the setting in the future.
I also sensed something of a social commentary woven in the story. It seemed to me that Baradon closely resembled our own failing nation. Whether this was intentional or not, I can’t say (and, truly, it doesn’t matter if it WAS conscious), but I recognized it.
HA, that means the world to me that you realized it. I did base it on our nation.
Subconsciously, I mean.
